Start off 2023 with the end in mind.

How is your business doing? Is it better or worse than last year? Is your business getting more profitable or less?

Start Off 2023 with the end in mind.

I know that it is cliche to talk about goal setting going into the new year. Regardless, here we are. Goals are important for your business, and for your personal life as well.

How is your business doing? Is it better or worse than last year? Is your business getting more profitable or less?

Let's talk about goal setting.1. Leading indicators over lagging measures. 2. Set goals with your team members as well. 3. Share your progress with your team.

So that I can make sure the Dive Briefing is offering as much value as possible, I want to know more about you and your store. If you have time, please schedule a call and we can talk about diving, your business, and your goals.

Focus on the leading indicators, not the lagging measures.

Revenue, Profit, and Certification #s are all lagging measures. By the time you know what the number is, it is too late to change it.

Number of scheduled trips, number of website visits, number of phone calls, number of try scuba students are all leading indicators. You can tweak these numbers and as these number increase, so do revenue, profit and certification #'s

#1 thing to do for 2023 is figure out what the leading indicators are for your goals and focus on them.

Set goals with your team members and instructional staff.

It's one thing setting goals for your store. Meeting your goals is another thing. It will take your entire team to meet your team goals.

The trick is to align your team member goals with your store goals. Do you have a dive master that really wants to be an instructor? Could they bring in new students once they are an instructor? Do they have earning goals that align with the store?

Now is a great time to schedule 1:1 meetings with your team. Work through goal setting with them. This process is rewarding. It allows you to help your team achieve their goals while they help you achieve yours.

Share your progress with your team.

I used to have a simple whiteboard calendar where my team wrote the gross sales for each day of the month. If we met our goal, the number was green. If we didn't, the number was red. (Yes, I understand this is not an example of a leading indicator.)

The board would motivate the entire team. If we had a slow start to the month, we could double down on marketing and bring sales up.

Is there a simple way you can share goal progress with your team? What does it mean to you and your team if you hit your goals?
